About

What We Do

The FANS Group was formed in 2013, as a number of individuals involved in Commercial Air Lines, Corporate Operators, Avionics Manufacturers, Data Providers, and Civil Air Authority & Air Navigation Services Provider determined a significant gap existed within the industry. Avionics, Airframe and Navaid manufacturers were moving full speed ahead on NEXTGEN & SESAR infrastructure and equippage. Communications manufacturers were installing CP/DLC and ADS-B networks all over the globe, and CNS/ATM was beginning the migration to FANS-type operational concepts.

Why We Do It

Avionics, Airframe and Navaid manufacturers were moving full speed ahead on NEXTGEN & SESAR infrastructure and equippage. Communications manufacturers were installing CP/DLC and ADS-B networks all over the globe, and CNS/ATM was beginning the migration to FANS-type operational concepts.

The gap exists primarily within data. Legacy paper AIP’s are gradually becoming electronic databases published in the EUROCONTROL/FAA consensus format known as Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM). This new “lingua-franca” of the aeronautical world allows users of Air Transportation systems to openly and reliably exchange the baseline information about each country’s aviation infrastructure.

How We Do It

Within NEXTGEN and SESAR, information such as Departures, Routes, Arrivals and Instrument Procedures are all moving from long-existing static data in an AIP, to dynamic information that only exists for days or even hours at a time. This dynamic information is transmitted in AIXM.

To allow for more accurate position reporting from aircraft to aircraft, a 2nd information exchange model was constructed known as Flight Information Exchange Model (FIXM) by EUROCONTROL/FAA. This creates a global standard message for aircraft position reporting based on GNSS, intertial & air/data sensors that can be used for basic collision avoidance thru to Regional Air Flow optimization.

Given the single largest factor on aircraft meeting or not meeting their published route objectives is the Weather, it was natural that we pursue a common information model to exchange Wx which is the 3rd information exchange model known as Weather Information Exchange Model (WIXM).
